CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Darla pulled open her dresser drawer, looking through the meager selection of clothes she’d brought with her from New York City. There wasn’t a lot to choose from, but she was determined to make a cute outfit out of what she’d brought for her date with Rick that night. Well, she wasn’t sure that ‘date’ was the right word, but he had asked her to come over for dinner, so what else would one call that?

To her surprise, she was fairly nervous to see him again, even though she’d long since overcome her childhood awe of him. They had enough in common and their banter was easy going enough that she felt like she should feel calm and collected for the dinner that night. That, however, could not be further from how she was feeling. Butterflies erupted in her stomach whenever she thought about going over to his house and she had that feeling she got right before getting on a rollercoaster—sort of wanting to back out but also really, really excited for what was to come.

Rifling through her drawer again, Darla picked up a striped pencil skirt and held it up, thinking through the tops she could wear with it before tossing it aside. Next, she pulled out a summer dress with a daisy print pattern on it. She’d always loved this vintage piece—it made her smile and the artsiness of it appealed to her. She could wear it with her yellow sandals and her daisy earrings. Darla quickly undressed and pulled the dress on, looking in the full-length mirror hanging from the closet door. She’d seen the outfit a million times before, but now she looked at it with careful, scrutinizing eyes.

Is it too much? She pursed her lips in thought, turning this way and that to test it from all angles. What if he’s dressed super casually?

The last thing she wanted was to turn up looking like an overdressed eager beaver. The thought made her shudder and she quickly undressed, opting instead for some jeans and a pretty silk blouse. The blue of the blouse made her dark eyes pop and she always felt confident when she wore it. Surveying herself in the mirror, she finally pronounced the outfit acceptable and moved on to hair and makeup, feeling all the while like a high schooler getting ready for her first date all over again.

She couldn’t help but laugh as she remembered her first date ever. She had been in the tenth grade, and Bryan Martinez had asked her out. She didn’t have any feelings for him one way or the other, but she had said yes, desperate to get her first date ever out of the way. His mom had driven him over to pick her up and chauffeured them to the movie theater. Darla winced at that thought. Bryan’s mom had kept looking at her in the rearview mirror and giving her awkward smiles and thumbs up. She’d told them ‘not to have too much fun without her’ when she’d dropped them off at the theater too.
